Reducing Bureaucracy

Reducing Bureaucracy Practitioners Group

The reducing bureaucracy practitioners group, chaired by Jan Berry, is working to remove unnecessary bureaucracy and empower police officers to rebuild trust and confidence in policing.

As part of her role, leading the review of reducing police bureaucracy, Jan Berry has established a reducing bureaucracy practitioner group, which will assist her in the process. The practitioner group is currently comprised of 21 frontline officers and police staff of varying experience. The group will provide a view on where unnecessary bureaucracy exists and assist Jan in assessing the impact of any proposals.

The group, which is chaired by Jan Berry, met for the first time on the 1st and 2nd of December in Staffordshire. The purpose of this introductory meeting was for Jan to introduce the group and explain the role it will play in supporting her as the independent reducing bureaucracy advocate.  Vernon Coaker, Minister of State for Policing at the Home Office, also attended and welcomed the group, placing it in the wider context of the government's police reform agenda.

The practitioners group is intended to be geographically and functionally representative of front-line police officers and staff. The membership will be continually reviewed and a mission statement for the group has been agreed:

'To remove unnecessary bureaucracy from systems and processes, empower officers to apply common sense principles and rebuild trust and confidence in policing.'
