Performance and Measurement

Interpreting the Data

This section describes the data for the Performance Indicators within APACS for 2008/09.

Indicators are drawn from a number of sources including:

  • surveys: these include the British Crime Survey (for example, covering fear of crime), and surveys conducted locally by police forces (for example asking users about their satisfaction with the service they receive)
  • recorded crime: from forces’ own records of the crimes that are reported
  • administrative records: including, for example, asset recovery, offences brought to justice and sickness absence
  • others: for example, efficiency and Prolific and other Priority Offenders have their own collection mechanisms.

For each force, data is shown for each indicator, with a small number of exceptions (including the City of London, which has a small resident population). Where appropriate, footnotes indicate why data is not available.

Indicators are listed in order and are largely grouped into similar areas of policing activity. For each indicator, data is shown for 2008/09, along with comparable data for 2007/08. In addition, for each force and each indicator a ‘comparator data’ figure is shown.
