Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

West Mercia Constabulary incorporates the fourth-largest policing area in England and Wales with considerable diversity in terms of demography and demand. Stability and enthusiasm have been engendered under the leadership of the Chief Constable, enabling significant and sustained improvements to be made in key areas of performance. A highly devolved regime permits the implementation of local solutions for local policing problems, enhanced by good use of the extended police family within local policing units.

Under the banner of the Chief Constable’s four key principles – performance focus, integrity, embracing diversity and quality people – West Mercia is well positioned to continue its emphasis on customer focus and continuous improvement. Success has been achieved in relation to a number of high-profile major enquiries, including some notable historic cases. Challenges for the force in 2005/06 will be to maintain the constabulary strength and complete key capital building projects.
