Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.
South Yorkshire police has responsibility for the county’s three boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham and also the city of Sheffield. With this responsibility comes a number of challenges, including the policing of five football league grounds and a number of other major sporting events.
In 2004/05 the force achieved a good reduction in most crime areas and a small reduction in crime overall. There was a significant increase in recorded violent crime. The force increased its sanction detection rate in all crime areas.
As the first force in Europe to be ‘Recognised for Excellence’ by the European Foundation for Quality Management (2003), South Yorkshire is moving towards a more community-focused and partnership-enhanced style of policing, with local policing teams now established in the force. Other reform initiatives include the establishment of major incident teams, the restructuring of the Sheffield Basic Command Units (BCUs) and a rationalisation of senior ranks.
