Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

Norfolk is a largely rural county with three major population centres, Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn, which are the headquarters of the three territorial areas, western, central and eastern. Force HQ is at Wymondham, which is the operations and communications centre for the force.

In 2004/05 the force delivered a good level of performance. Significant levels of crime reduction were achieved in all areas except violent crime. Norfolk also maintained a high level of detections. In addition the force has delivered a good level of service in other business areas, having achieved two ‘excellent’ and no ‘poor’ HMIC component assessments.

The force’s strategic aim encompasses policing style and intelligence-led policing, which in turn seeks to strike a balance between caring for its community and deterring and detecting criminals. The force has embarked on a Home Office-backed collaborative venture called the 3 Counties Project with its neighbours, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
