Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

Last year the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) showed significant improvement in many areas, with crime down and detections up. This was particularly true for the Safer Neighbourhood Wards which form a key part of the new Commissioner’s strategy for neighbourhood policing.

Overall, the MPS results were more polarised than those of any other force, with three ‘good’ assessments, one ‘fair’ and three ‘poor’, although the result for investigating crime is borderline between ‘fair’ and ‘poor’. It is also important to remember when comparing the MPS with metropolitan forces that no other force deals with the unique range, sophistication and scale of issues, including the international, national and capital city functions, faced by the MPS.
