Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

The county of Derbyshire includes a mixture of both urban and rural areas, ranging from former mining communities in the north-east, the industrialised city of Derby in the south, to the Peak District in the north-west. During the last year the force has coped well with some significant challenges, notably the response to the G8 environmental summit held near Derby in March 2005.

In 2004/05, the force achieved crime reductions in all areas except for a small increase in violent crime. Derbyshire has improved its detection rate in all crime areas, and has achieved good results in other performance areas.

The challenge for the force is to strengthen its performance in comparison to its peers, a task aided by good continuity in the command team, underpinned by the Chief Constable who recently accepted an offer to extend his contract by two years. In 2005 a new police authority chair was appointed.
