Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

Cleveland Police Force covers an area of 230 square miles, with a population of just over half a million. It is divided into four operational districts, co-terminous with the unitary local authorities of Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton and Middlesbrough.

During 2004/05, the force presented a mixed picture of performance compared to its peers in the key areas of crime reduction and crime investigation. However, the assessment process revealed some areas of good performance and improvement, including work on major and serious crime investigation and working in partnership.

The force and police authority have been working with the Police Standards Unit (PSU) since spring 2004. Together they have devised and implemented a comprehensive action plan to focus on crime reduction and crime investigation. This work is ongoing and should show improvements in performance during 2005/06.
