Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

The force has recently implemented a major restructuring and change programme, ‘Taking Control’, to improve public confidence with the development of neighbourhood policing. This has involved both strategic planning and a business-led implementation approach with significant changes to call handling, prioritisation and response.

The force now comprises three Basic Command Units (BCUs) co-terminous with more than one local authority district and crime and disorder reduction partnership (CDRP). It has an ambitious building programme using public funding initiatives to replace existing police buildings and custody facilities.

The Chief Constable is the ACPO lead on race and diversity and the force is active in driving forward fairness and equality issues, in particular in its dealings with the travelling community. The significant challenge to the force in the future is ensuring that the demand for services is controlled, enabling local policing teams to be more pro-active without losing the confidence of the public.
