Summary of HMIC baseline assessments.

The force’s work is made more complex by its contrasting policing environment, ranging from pockets of deprivation in Bristol to many sparsely populated rural areas in Somerset. Investment in resources to combat organised crime networks based in Bristol has helped to reduce crime throughout the force area.

The new Chief Constable, appointed in January 2005, has set a clear agenda for improvement. He is particularly determined to increase the proportion of crimes for which the offender is brought to justice from the current comparatively poor rate. Other priorities include maintaining the momentum of crime reduction and increasing customer satisfaction and public confidence in the police – a new force service centre will transform the way calls from the public are handled. This is a key part of a wide-ranging citizen-focused policing programme designed to build upon a well established system of local policing in partnership.
