Hampshire cracks down on burglary

15 July 2009

Hampshire constabulary arrested 1,575 people for burglary between January and June this year under a force-wide crackdown on burglars.

Operation Nemesis involved targeting known burglars and their associates, recovering items stolen during break-ins and educating the public about how to avoid being burgled.

Every police officer and member of police staff was involved in the operation.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said, ‘Burglary has fallen nationally by 55% since 1997 and we are determined to keep crime down by staying on the front foot and addressing challenges as soon as they emerge. But that would not be possible without the work of our partners like Hampshire Constabulary.

‘I would like to congratulate them for their dedication and innovative approach to tackling the crimes that matter to the public. We have always said that a rise in crime during the economic downturn is not inevitable and operations like this show what great results can be achieved by working together.’
