The Police Pensions Team
The police pensions and retirement policy team has responsibility for developing policy and issuing guidance on the police pension scheme and ill-health retirement and injury award procedures for police officers.
The team advises ministers, police authorities, local practitioners and others on police pensions, retirement and medical appeals policy issues.
Policy objectives include:
-
modernising police pension arrangements and improving the choice and flexibility they offer to police officers
-
improving the management of ill-health retirement including setting up improved appeals arrangements
-
encouraging greater flexibility in retaining officers beyond 30 years’ service
-
considering the reform of injury on duty awards as part of a Treasury-led review
The team is also responsible for pension arrangements for Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary.
The main audience for the work produced by this team is police authority pensions administrators and ill-health retirement administrators.
Key stakeholders are:
-
police authorities
-
chief constables
-
police pensions administrators
-
force administrative staff and doctors engaged in the management of ill-health retirement
-
police medical appeal boards (currently provided by Capita)
-
AVC providers (Standard Life and Equitable Life)
Contacting us:
Though the team is always happy to advise, due to limited resources the following recommendations are made to help address queries as quickly and efficiently as possible:
-
Pensions administrators should in the first instance consult published information (including this website) and raise queries on the Administrators' Forum before approaching the team.
-
Police officers should approach their force's pensions administrator if they have questions about their own pension arrangements. Please note that contacting us directly is not generally advisable as your pensions administrator will probably be in the best position to help you and they will approach us on your behalf should your query require this.
