Pensioners and Former Members
This page offers brief guidance on how the regulations introduced in 2006 will affect police officers who have already retired with a police pension and who may be thinking of rejoining the force.
Already retired with a police pension?
If you are currently receiving a police pension, you will most likely have retired under the 1987 regulations. The new scheme does not affect you. If you have any questions regarding your pension, please contact your local police pensions administrator.
Rejoining after retirement?
If you are rejoining the police force after retirement, your pension may be subject to 'abatement' (withdrawal of all or part of the pension) whilst you continue to serve. It will be paid again in full once you finally retire.
If you rejoin the force on or after 6 April 2006 following a break in service, you will automatically be admitted to NPPS unless you have 30 years' PPS service, in which case you have reached the maximum pensionable service and will be unable to build up any more police pension rights.
If you rejoin the force on or after 6 April 2006 following a break in service you cannot rejoin PPS unless you are rejoining at the police authority's invitation following the cessation of your disablement or following a successful appeal against dismissal or requirement to resign.
More information
If you are thinking of remaining in or re-joining the force after 30 years of service and want to find out more about the process and conditions that apply, please approach your force's 30+ administrator on this matter, who will be able to provide you with more information on the scheme. There is also information on the National Policing Improvement Agency's 30+ pages (new window).
For questions relating to the taxation of pensions, please go to the Pensions and Tax page of this website.
For any other questions please contact the pensions administrator of your (former) force.
