Reporting and Results

This page contains information on how to report ABC data.

Internally

At a minimum, forces are expected to report for the Policing Plan. This should be based upon the Revenue Budget for Financial Year 2 and activity information for Financial Year 1.

  • before determining how else to report internally, ensure that you are aware what your BCU Commanders and other senior management require – this must be useful and relevant
  • all information should also be available for management to use for its own purposes

Home Office

From April 2004 it is now mandatory for all forces to submit ABC data to the Home Office once a year, to enable accurate inter-force comparison. This report will be based upon the (at that stage) unaudited financial outturn for Financial Year 1 and the activity information for Financial Year 1.

This is part of the process of enabling good practice to be identified and of giving weaker forces central assistance. Forces should submit data in July of Financial Year 2, following the end of the relevant financial year.

To submit data to the Home Office, please use the templates in Home Office Reports Format. The data should be submitted in .xls or .csv format so that it can be imported into the Home Office QuanTa database for analysis.

Each of the Activity Codes and Role Codes fits into one of four Domains that segment policing activity into its constituent parts. Please see Diagram of PPAF Domain Structure. (Domains 1-4 are those for which ABC seeks to provide quantifiable data about the costs of policing an area.)

Please also see Domain Mapping, which shows how each incident and non-incident-linked activity fits into one of the four Domains, or is categorised as Operational Support and allocated to incidents and activities.
