Public Order Unit
The purpose of this unit is to develop policy, and support Ministers, the police and others, on issues relating to public order and civil contingency planning.
Such matters include:
- developing programmes, initiatives and policies to reduce road crime and football-related disorder
- carrying out functions related to the licensing of firearms
- supporting a co-ordinated governmnet response to requests for international police assistance
- public order legislation and the response to public disorder including the use of firearms and less lethal weapons by the police
- development of plans to manage mass fatalities arising from "no notice" incidents
- management of the programme to provide for a safe and secure Olympic Games in London in 2012
