Policing Powers and Protection Unit

The Policing Powers and Protection Unit (PPPU) is responsible for matters relating to policing powers, police integrity and overseeing the effective sponsorship of all the Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) assigned to the Crime Reduction and Community Safety Group (CRCSG) within the Home Office.

In particular, the unit is responsible for:

• developing policy relating to police and forensic powers, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) review; police custodial health issues
• developing policies on police complaints and discipline; safer detention, including deaths in police custody; the development of a police complaints system in Turkey
• directly sponsoring the:
  • Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) (new window)
  • National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) (new window)
• overseeing the effective NDPB sponsorship of the:
  • Serious and Organised Crime Organisation (SOCA) (new window)
  • Security Industry Authority (SIA) (new window)
  • Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) (new window)
