Policing Powers and Protection Unit
This unit is responsible for matters relating to police powers and integrity. It oversees delivery of the Bichard Implementation programme including, jointly with the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Health, policy on safeguarding vulnerable groups.
The Policing Powers and Protection Unit (PPPU) is responsible for:
- developing policy relating to police and forensic powers, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) review, police custodial health issues and missing persons
- ensuring implementation of Bichard recommendations, developing policies on criminal records and child trafficking, and Home Office child protection co-ordination
- developing policies on police complaints and discipline, safer detention including deaths in police custody, the Turkey police complaints system twinning project and Private Security Industry (PSI)
